Australian Mathematics Competition - Results

After another fantastic experience of the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) this year the results are in and we could not be prouder of the boys and girls of St Mary's who volunteered to sit this competition!

The competition took place online from 3rd - 5th August under the watchful eye of Mr Freeman. Our students competed in the Middle Primary (Years 3–4), and Upper Primary (Years 5–6) divisions which each gave students 25 multiple-choice questions and five questions that need whole number answers to complete. Students were encouraged to attempt as many questions as they wished with the earlier problems representing more familiar mathematics while the later problems were more difficult and intended to challenge, needing more sophisticated problem-solving skills to solve successfully.

We had 74 students from Years 3-6 compete and of these, 38 achieved a certificate of Proficiency against the Australian standards, 8 students gained a Credit award and a further 4 were awarded Distinctions, meaning these 4 were in the top 20% of the year level within their region.

What was really pleasing for us here at St Mary's was that 39 students from Years 4-6 competed for the second year in a row and of those, 15 achieved a higher award than they did in last year's competition. This is siignificant because the standard required increases with each year of scholing so these children have done brilliantly. We also love seeing that the results of all the hard work and responsibility the teachers and leaders have taken on to improve our Mathematics program this year and the willingness of our students to show courage and test themselves is already paying dividends.

WOW, we hope as many of these students as possible enter agin next year and they enourage their classmates to enter as well as we can't wait to see what the 2023 competitors can achieve!

Certificates will be given out at the assembly on October 3rd and we hope to see some of you there to acknowledge your child/ren's achievements.

Kind Regards,
