Learning Diversity

At St Mary’s we welcome students of differing abilities at St Mary’s and work to cater for the needs of all, recognising that everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. To do this, we have a Learning Diversity Leader whose role it is to work with parents and teachers to access services and apply for funding to support students with additional learning needs. Our Learning Diversity Leader liaises with Catholic Education to source external and internal services such as speech therapists, psychologists and learning consultants to provide our students with the best support and teaching practices available which enables them to achieve success. The Learning Diversity Leader also works with staff to prepare Personalised Learning Plans for students who require additional support or extension in their learning.

To help support students, we have the following programs:

  • Reading Intervention in Year 1 and 2

  • Toe By Toe - an intervention program which focuses on the specific needs of students with dyslexia

  • Focus targeted teaching  groups – Point of need groupings based on Pre / Post Data in Maths, Reading, Writing & Spelling

  • SMART Spelling program

  • Peaceful Kids

  • Learning Support Officers who provide additional assistance in classrooms

  • Maths Extension groups
