Education In Faith: In the Spirit of Mary MacKillop

On Saturday we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the canonisation of Australia’s first saint and one of our guiding lights here at St Mary’s, Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop.

The theme for this year’s celebration was Take fresh Courage (a quote written by Mary MacKillop on 21 May 1877) as, each time Mary experienced a cross, she took fresh courage. We were called to reflect on what advice does Mary give to help us to take fresh courage?

Take on fresh Courage in Leading

What would be Mary’s advice today in the midst of our current experience of Covid-19? As a leader, she was challenged to develop the courage, wisdom, clear-sightedness, counsel and steadfastness of good leadership. We remember the example of Mary MacKillop as she was elected Mother General at the first General Chapter of the Institute back in March 1875 and wonder what advice she would have for our Church and community leaders today. Perhaps she would have offered a prayer such as this:

PRAYER

Spirit of Authority,

in Jesus’ and Mary MacKillop’s lives,

we have examples of servant leadership.

Mentor us in our roles of leading.

Make us attentive to the Church and national leaders

endeavouring to keep people safe in this time of pandemic.

Help them to take advice from experts

as they decide on the best course of action

for the health and well-being of all people.

Encourage us to support our leaders’ efforts

for the common good.

We ask this in the name of Christ.

Amen  (Monica Barlow rsj)
