Term 3 Week 10

Principal's Message: 16 September 2022

Dear families,

We have made it to the end of another term!  I know it’s been a challenging one for many with so many in our community being unwell. We are starting to see glimpses of the gorgeous weather that will great us next term. Let’s hope we get to enjoy some of it over the break.

Yesterday Marg and I had the chance to visit our Year 5/6 students at YMCA Anglesea. It was a great day with lovely weather. The students are making us proud, not only through their positive behaviour but also how they are each stepping up to the challenge of pushing themselves to try new things. It is so wonderful to see them living out our school values and having the most amazing time away. I have no doubt they will sleep soundly tonight. Thanks to the senior teachers along with Mrs Sims, Miss S, Miss A and Jane who have put in so many hours both before and during the time away to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students.

Preparations are underway for next term and next year. This year we had hoped to commence work on our Sensory Garden, but with limited opportunities for fundraising this year, we will begin work towards this project in earnest in 2023. There are other exciting changes coming and we look forward to sharing more information early next term.

Thanks to the parents who have completed the MACSSIS Survey. There is still time today to complete it. The leadership team examine these results each year to help set goals for the following year. The results of these surveys over time, also help set longer-term targets when our school undergoes its formal Review every 4 years. Our next Review takes place next year.

This week we congratulate the La Barbera family who welcomed baby Valentino last month. I’m sure Sofia is continuing to be a loving big sister.

We also congratulate the Busuttil family on the arrival of baby Harlen. Logan and Scarlett have been excitedly sharing this news with their friends and teachers.

I wish our students a fantastic break.
Looking forward to an eventful and exciting last term.

Blessings,

Sonia

Book Fair 2022

A huge thank you to everyone who came over to our Book Fair last week.
We had a huge year this year, with over $4000 spent at this fair alone!

This means that St Mary's has over $1600 to spend on Book Club books and literacy resources!
What a difference that will make to the children's learning.

A huge thank you to Beryl, our amazing volunteer, who spends countless hours running Book Club each year.

A huge thank you to Jane S and Mrs Ryan who helped run the show, too.
Happy reading!

Australian Mathematics Competition - Results

After another fantastic experience of the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) this year the results are in and we could not be prouder of the boys and girls of St Mary's who volunteered to sit this competition!
The competition took place online from 3rd - 5th August under the watchful eye of Mr Freeman. Our students competed in the Middle Primary (Years 3–4), and Upper Primary (Years 5–6) divisions which each gave students 25 multiple-choice questions and five questions that need whole number answers to complete. Students were encouraged to attempt as many questions as they wished with the earlier problems representing more familiar mathematics while the later problems were more difficult and intended to challenge, needing more sophisticated problem-solving skills to solve successfully.

We had 74 students from Years 3-6 compete and of these, 38 achieved a certificate of Proficiency against the Australian standards, 8 students gained a Credit award and a further 4 were awarded Distinctions, meaning these 4 were in the top 20% of the year level within their region.

What was really pleasing for us here at St Mary's was that 39 students from Years 4-6 competed for the second year in a row and of those, 15 achieved a higher award than they did in last year's competition. This is siignificant because the standard required increases with each year of scholing so these children have done brilliantly. We also love seeing that the results of all the hard work and responsibility the teachers and leaders have taken on to improve our Mathematics program this year and the willingness of our students to show courage and test themselves is already paying dividends.

WOW, we hope as many of these students as possible enter agin next year and they enourage their classmates to enter as well as we can't wait to see what the 2023 competitors can achieve!

Certificates will be given out at the assembly on October 3rd and we hope to see some of you there to acknowledge your child/ren's achievements.

Kind Regards,

Matthew Taylor and Tony Freeman
